TIL What it Means to Fence

TIL (Today I Learned) that a fencer is not just someone who fights with a sword.

I told my scuba buddies today that I was planning on being a fencer for halloween this year, upon which one of my friends said, “you deal in stolen goods?” I looked at him dumbfounded, and then got schooled.

Turns out a fence can informally mean someone who sells stolen goods. I suppose you could also call a fence a fencer, but I’m not sure how correct that is.

  1. I thought you were going to dress like your Dad…lol…we have been putting this “fence” up for weeks.(sooo your Dad is a “fencer”?)…really?… right?…maybe?… Seriously, when I read your TIL I thought about toolbelts, bill fail hats, sweat bands, work boots…good costume. Then I saw dollar signs $$$$$$$…OH yes, fenceing gear…great costume! BUT “fence”…hummmm (more dollar signs $$$$$$$) long black coat with watches and jewelry attached to the inside. To much fun! You keep my mind busy! Remind me to tell you about the “fence” back-in-the-day.

    1. Hah. I guess that does make dad a fencer.

The black coat with watches and jewelry inside would be an awesome costume! I’ll have to remember that for next year. 🙂
