This is my Strategic Life Goals dashboard. It’s an experiment in measuring my progress in achieving my life’s goals. You can read about my philosophy on strategic life goals here.
Current Strategic Goals *
- Legacy – Make my mark on the world by making things and inspiring people.
- Philanthropy – Make the world a better place by promoting art, science, civil liberties, and environmental conservation.
- Personal Growth – Learn and experience life, and share that experience with the people I love.
- Money – Make enough so it’s a non-issue & so I can take it off this list.
* In no particular order and subject to change.

Each blog essay, how-to post, tweet, Flickr photo, and Facebook update is a “creation” of sorts, and has the opportunity to help and inspire people. I keep this in mind, but these things are like nickels. They add up overtime, but they’re relatively insignificant by themselves. Following this metaphor, I consider the projects in the table above Benjamins.
Philanthropy
Make the world a better place by promoting art, science, civil liberties, and environmental conservation.

Personal Growth
Explore, learn, and experience all this world has to offer. Share that experience with the people I love.
This is a difficult goal to track, but I always keep it in mind. However, one semi-easy metric to track is the places my wife Sharlee and I have traveled to.

Money
To paraphrase Tim O’Reilly; Money is like gas. You need it to get where you’re going, but it’s not an end in itself. My goal is to make enough money that it becomes a non-issue to me and my family.
Here’s my progress so far in 3 very ambiguous progress bars. Ambiguous as they are, you can see I’m pretty far away from my goal.
